In a recent project for a Norwegian corporate client, we were asked to make a web solution with a semantic web backend from scratch. We look at the reasons for why a client would want a semantic web solution and why it makes sense for us providing one. We've delivered this solution and the client has come back to us and asked for another, similar solution for a different segment of their business. Our solution is based on open source components, Oracle databases, modeling and server components from TopQuadrant.

Technically, we'll briefly review what a semantic web solution is and introduce core terms like triple store, rdf, sparql, ontologies, inference and owl. In a similar fashion, we review core technological components and products underpinning our solution. We'll compare the semantic web appproach to a conventional rdms approach noting pros and cons and give advice on when to consider adopting a semantic web approach. Finally we'll go through the solution architecture and look at how we used a semantic web backend as a component in our solution, considering in particular security and performance.
